Colorado has dismissed outside linebacker N.J. Falo from the football program for a violation of team rules, the school reported on Monday evening.
While CU did not go into details about Falo's violation, this is the second time he's been disciplined by head coach Mike MacIntyre.
Falo and running back Donald "Dino" Gordon were suspended after they were both arrested and accused of stealing items from a dorm room in April of 2016. Both players took plea deals last summer.
Falo remained suspended for the first three games of last season, but was reinstated for the final 11 games. Gordon never played in a game for the Buffs and left the team in the offseason.
A junior from Sacramento, Falo was expected to be one of CU's top edge linebackers this season. He recorded 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks as a backup last season and was atop the depth chart at outside linebacker this spring, with senior Derek McCartney recovering from a knee injury.
In two seasons with the Buffs, Falo played in 16 games at both inside and outside linebacker, recording 29 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three pass breakups. His older brother, Nate, played for MacIntyre at San Jose State.
With Falo no longer on the team, juniors Terran Hasselbach, Michael Mathewes and Shamar Hamilton - a junior college transfer who joined the team in January - join McCartney as upper classmen at outside linebacker.
The Buffs also have redshirt freshman Sam Bennion, and an opportunity could be open for true freshmen, such as Dante Sparaco, Carson Wells or Jacob Callier.
Falo's departure leaves CU with 84 scholarship players, one below the NCAA maximum of 85. According to CU, MacIntyre has not decided what to do with the last scholarship, but he could give it to a walk-on, as he's done in the past.
