With just two weeks remaining before the season opener against state rival Colorado State, the Colorado Buffaloes have suffered their first significant setback.
On Friday evening, CU officials announced that receiver Juwann Winfree will miss the entire season due to a torn ACL he suffered at practice Wednesday morning.
Winfree was expected to contribute immediately for the Buffs this fall after transferring from Coffeyville Community College, where last season he recorded 55 receptions for 837 yards and seven touchdowns while ranking as the No. 26 junior college prospect in the nation. A year earlier, Winfree saw action in eight games as a true freshman at Maryland, grabbing 11 receptions for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
"We all really feel for Juwann, he is a phenomenal young man and has fit in really well on our team," CU head coach Mike MacIntyre said in a statement. "Unfortunately this is what can happen in football. But Juwann is a very positive young man and no doubt will work hard in his rehabilitation and will be back for 2017."
A surgery date has not yet been set for Winfree, who still will have two years of eligibility remaining when he returns in 2017.
