The Environmental Protection Agency will recognize the University of Colorado athletic department on Thursday for its game-day environmental practices during the 2013 season.

CU had the second highest national waste diversion rate during the 2013 football season by keeping more than 90 percent of game-day waste out of landfills. The university is among several colleges being recognized by the EPA at the Collegiate Sports Sustainability Summit being held at the Boulder campus this week. The Ohio State University had the highest diversion rate.

According to a news release, CU will be honored for "excellence in environmental management and sustainable operations in their sports programs."

Representatives from more than 40 colleges and universities will attend the summit to talk about how to make their campuses more socially, economically and environmentally responsible, according to the release.
