Colorado senior Joanne Reid notched her fourth win of the season as the Buffs began the New Mexico Invitational at the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area in Red River, N.M., on Friday.

Reid won the women's 5K classical race in 17 minutes, 12.2 seconds. Denver's Makayla Cappel was second (17:40.2) and CU's Eliska Hajkova was third (17:41.1).

Reid has won three straight races and four of five this season.

"It was a little crazy out there, actually," Reid said. "A lot of girls fell, including (fellow Buff) Maria (Nordstrom). Eliska was getting sick and just kept going. For me it went smooth. This is actually the first time I've classic skied here, so I took it out slow and sped up. I caught Eliska about half way through and we skied together the rest of the way, because she's such an incredible classic skier, I followed her on the hills."

When Nordstrom fell, she broke a binding and injured her shoulder, eventually finishing 30th in a time of 24:13.2.

However, the two podium finishes lifted the Buffs to second place after the first day of competition with 217 points. Utah is leading the meet with 228 points after a 1-3-4 finish in the men's 5K classical race. Denver is third at 199.

Freshman Gustav Nordstroem paced the Buffs on the men's side with a fifth place in a time of 15:07.6. Sophomore Andreas Hoye was eighth in 15:14.4. Both skiers cracked the top 10 for the first time this season.

Utah's Miles Havlick won the race 14:10.7.

Nordic action concludes Saturday with the 10K freestyle interval start races.
