Former University of Colorado standout and current volunteer assistant coach Jenny Simpson won her first 1,500-meter IAAF Diamond League Championship on Thursday in Zurich, Switzerland.

Simpson entered the race in third-place of the Diamond League standings and needed to win in order to take home the championship. She won the race in 3 minutes and 59.92 seconds, but it wasn't easy.

Simpson ran in front and for most of the race, Sifan Hassan was right on her shoulder. Simpson started to pull away from Hassan with about 100 meters left, but then USA teammate Shannon Rowbury moved past Hassan and challenged Simpson in the final meters. It was a photo finish in every sense of the word as the two women lunged at the line; but Simpson had Rowbury by 0.01 seconds.

"It was very dramatic," CU head track and field coach Mark Wetmore said. "She once again took over after the pacers pulled off the track and did a lot of the pulling in the race. It's hard out there alone, knowing that everybody is coming. People who are dying to beat you are breathing down your neck. It's pretty tough and you could see how hard she was going and she made it by the smallest of margins, but it was a huge margin in the end."
