Colorado quarterback Steven Montez has been named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which honors the top player in college football each season.

A junior from El Paso, Tex., Montez threw for 2,975 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, while also rushing for 338 yards and three scores. His 276.1 yards of total offense per game in 2017 ranks 12th nationally among returning players (second in the Pac-12).

The Maxwell Award watch list included 85 players from around the country, including 12 from the Pac-12. Montez is one of six Pac-12 quarterbacks on the list.

Coming into this season, Montez is ninth in CU history in passing yards (3,992) and 11th in total yards (4,538). He started all 12 games for the Buffs last season.

No CU players were on the watch list for the Bednarik Award, which was also released on Monday. The Bednarik Award honors the nation's top defensive player.

Several other award watch lists will be released in the next 11 days.
