Whenever Colorado and Denver match up in lacrosse, fans can generally expect a good game. But on Friday afternoon at Kittredge Field in Boulder, the No. 9 Buffaloes shut down the No. 14 Pioneers in a stunning performance 14-3.

"I think coming into the game—they're a good team, they've played so well this year—we knew it was going to be a battle," CU coach Ann Elliott said.

From the start, the high-flying Buffs decimated the Pioneers on defense and fared equally well on offense, gaining a near double-digit lead by halftime as three Buffs notched hat tricks in the first half alone. From start to finish, their speed far out-matched Denver's.

"Speed and athleticism is one of our strengths," Elliott said. "When we can get in the open field and use that, I think we're very dangerous."

Senior attacker Johnna Fusco led the offensive stampede with five goals and two assists, followed by senior attacker Katie Macleay and junior attacker Darby Kiernan, who each added three goals of their own.

"It was really a team effort from the beginning, and I think that's we needed to focus on from the last game and bring it to this game," Fusco said.

The Buffs got off to a rapid start on Friday afternoon, notching two early goals before the Pioneers could respond. From there on out, nothing much went Denver's way as the Buffs pounded them on offense and hardly let them touch the ball.

Throughout the rest of the half, the Buffaloes dominated in every aspect as Fusco, Kiernan and Macleay recorded hat tricks before the horn sounded for the intermission.

At the half, the Buffs led 10-1.

The Buffs slowed down significantly in the second half, but the Pioneers' luck didn't change much as the Buffs went on to win, 14-3.

The Buffs return to action on Sunday, March 5 as they host Marquette at 1 p.m.

"I think we're excited about our progress over the last three years and this season, our start so far, but we got a quick turnaround and tough game on Sunday against a very scrappy and competitive team in Marquette," Elliott said.
