That run of success against ranked foes is no more for the University of Colorado volleyball team.
After debuting in the 2016 national poll at No. 18 following last week's wins against top-20 programs from Penn State and Illinois, the Buffs were unable to continue carrying the momentum in another big showdown Friday night, as No. 15 San Diego handed CU a loss in a three-game sweep in the first game of the San Diego Invitational.
The Buffs were unable to get on track, dropping the first set 25-20 before the Toreros completed the victory with decisions of 25-18 and 25-21. CU (4-2) never led in the final frame and led only briefly in the opening stages of each of the first two sets.
CU matched a season-low with a .220 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Stephanie Shadley pace the Buffs' attack with eight kills, with Alexa Smith adding seven kills and Naghede Abu six. Abu also recorded six blocks while Cierra Simpson added 10 digs.
The Buffs will look to get back on track Saturday afternoon against UC-Irvine (3 p.m. MDT).
