LONG BEACH, Calif. — A rough start to the season continued for the Colorado women's basketball team on Sunday.
Host Long Beach State pulled away late to hand the Buffs a 59-42 loss at Walter Pyramid.
CU (3-4) has lost three in a row, its first three-game skid in non-conference play since early in the 2008-09 season. It's also the first time CU has been below the .500 mark before January since a 2-3 start in 2008-09.
This was also the Buffs' lowest-scoring game since a 57-40 loss to Stanford on Jan. 4, 2013, and its lowest point total in a nonconference game since a 77-40 loss to Seton Hall on Dec. 9, 2008.
Lauren Huggins led CU with 11 points and was the only Buff in double figures, but she missed 15 of her 18 shots and was 3-for-16 from 3-point range.
Offense was a struggle all afternoon for the Buffs, who made just 16 of 56 shots (28.6 percent), including five of 23 from 3-point range (21.7 percent). The Buffs also committed 22 turnovers.
Despite the struggles, the Buffs were within striking distance in the fourth quarter.
Haley Smith hit a jumper with 5 minutes, 8 seconds to play, pulling he Buffs within 45-39. The 49ers (7-1), however, responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes. CU was 0-for-7 from the floor during that stretch.
Jewelyn Sawyer had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead LBSU, while Raven Benton added 13 points and seven rebounds.
For the second game in a row, CU's leading scorer and rebounder, Jamee Swan, got into foul trouble. She was hit with her third and fourth fouls within the first 2:28 of the second half and was limited to five points and four rebounds in 20 minutes.
Huggins' 16 3-point attempts is one shy of the school record. Kate Fagan had 17 attempts against Syracuse on Dec. 31, 2002. ... Junior reserve forward Zoe Beard-Fails returned to action after missing three games with a concussion. ... Freshman Alexis Robinson had nine rebounds, along with five points and five assists, for the Buffs. ... CU returns home Wednesday to face Northern Arizona.
