Nuria Ormeño Ruiz lost her second match at the ITA/USTA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., on Friday while the rest of the team opened with wins at the San Diego State Invitational.
Ormeño Ruiz faced 72nd-ranked Caroline Brinson from Georgia at the national indoor tournament. After earning a first-set victory, Ormeño Ruiz fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 as she missed a chance for a win over a top-100 opponent and was eliminated.
All three of the CU singles players competing in San Diego won their matches on Friday.
Tina Bokhua had a big day, pairing with Annabelle Andrinopoulos for a 6-4 doubles win over Sarah Gong and Stephanie Hazell from UC Irvine. Bokhua then breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over UCI's Arisha Ladhani in singles competition.
Kyra Wojcik and Vitaliya Alkhovik also won their singles matches, both rallying after dropping the first set. Wojcik defeated UCI's Mazy Watrous 1-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Alkhovik won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Alex Harrigan, also from UCI.
"To have both Kyra and Vita to lose the first set but then to come back and win in three is a good thing," CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "They both made adjustments and saw the fruits of their labor."
Play will continue Saturday in San Diego.
