WALNUT, Calif. -- Colorado senior Billy Nelson recorded the fastest collegiate mark on the season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday night at the Mt. Sac Relays.
Nelson completed the race in 8 minutes, 41.99 seconds, to finish seventh overall.
Nelson was the only collegiate competitor in the section. Anthony Famiglietti won the race in 8:26.94 and had a commanding lead over the runner-up, Jordan Fife (Brooks Team), who finished in 8:36.69.
Ryan Gasper (Wisconsin) held the previous best collegiate mark in the country at 8:47.39.
The race was Nelson's first of the outdoor season and qualified him for regionals in May.
Sara Vaughn just missed the regional mark of 4:27.80 in the 1,500-meter run by running a time of 4:30.12. Oregon's Zoe Buckman (Oregon) won in 4:20.57.
On Thursday, CU freshman Allison Sawyer raced to her first regional qualifying time in the steeplechase, winning her section in 10:45.80. The time was also a personal best and she gave Sawyer her third first-place finish in as many races during the outdoor season.
Also for CU, Allison Eckert finished second in her 1,500 section, clocking a 4:35.81.
On the men's side, Christian Thompson just missed a regional mark in the steeplechase, recording a time of 9:08.54.
