Questions

  • dpease:

    Hi Kyle,
Thanks for your hard work and I do appreciate the columns, videos and blogs. I was wondering how some of the injured and/or redshirt Buffs were doing (need to start looking toward next year)? Katoa, Major, Rippy, Givins, Polk, etc. Also, I like the fact that CU has once again started to recruit the Midwest besides the usual Texas & Cali b/c there is a ton of talent in the heartland looking to go out west. I am sure that the games next year in OH & WVA will help with recruits. Thanks and go Buffs!

    • Kyle Ringo:

Hi everyone. Thanks for joining me once again this week. Let's get right to it.

Those games next year will help in recruiting those areas a little bit. It also helps that CU is on television so frequently.

The young and the injured are all doing well. I've talked to a few of the guys who had academic problems as well and they all seem to have learned a big lesson. Of course, the proof will come in the form of grades at the semester break. I think the three guys I've been most impressed with in terms of maturity and how they have handled their situations are Rippy, Polk and Major. Solid guys all the way around.

  • BuffTime:

    Hi Kyle,
What is your impression of the walk-on WRs? In particular Peter Bobseine who at least has pretty good size. I know nothing of him so that is all I can say about him.

Are any of the walk-ons who are in positions that we need help in standing out for next year?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I wouldn't say any of them are standing out. But there are some solid kids in there. Brandon Gouin at linebacker is one.

I think Peter has potential, but he will be well served by a winter in the weight program. He needs to add some muscle.

  • dirtyp28:

I know that there are a number of reasons that we have struggled this year: injuries, a tough schedule, youth and inexperience. Now, those things all should hopefully not be as big of a problem next season, with more experience, more depth, and a much easier schedule. How many games do we need to win to have a successful season?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Wow, this is way too early to be thinking about this issue and here is why. We have no idea of all the factors that will play in to next season at this point. Guys come and go. Coaches come and go. Injuries happen. Sure, it's easy to look at next year and say it should be and easier road, but the defensive line is going to be young as will the safeties. The offensive line will be young again, too, and it could be that a true freshman or relatively inexperienced sophomore wins the starting job at quarterback with a lot of young wide receivers. Who knows? Ask me again in August.

  • BuffTime:

Hindsight is 20/20. Given what we know about D Scott; his coming in out of shape, Speedy's success, and the O-line issues. Do you think he should have been red-shirted this year?

If you ignore the second and third thing we know now, the fact remains that he was out of shape and not ready at the beginning of the season. If he had been at least initially redshirted, then he could have gotten into shape and been healthy when Speedy went down. Maye Polk would not have redshirted at the beginning of the year, who knows.

I'm not dissing DS at all I think he will be a standout RB when he is healthy and will be a remarkable contributor by the time his days as a player are done. I am just questioning the use of a true freshman who was not in game shape.

    • Kyle Ringo:

No. At the beginning of the year, Darrell was thought to have huge potential (not that he still doesn't) and coaches and fans were hoping and believing he would produce big moments. No one even considered a redshirt. You have to view things in reality not hindsight.

  • buffalo_flyer:

Rivals 3-star Jeremiah Sirles OL 6-6 280 out of Lakewood, CO committed to Nebraska. How did this kid get out of Colorado?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Lots of kids get out of Colorado every year. He didn't have a scholarship offer from CU. Some believe he is overrated. Good luck to him.

  • BuffTime:

Speaking of adding muscle, has there been any talk of J-Fly bulking up a bit to aide his durability and for helping him in the shoving matches WRs get into with cover guys (not to mention being able to muscle his way for extra yardage if need be)?

    • Kyle Ringo:

That is always something that is addressed in the winter months. I'm sure coaches and Josh would like it if he could add a few pounds and some strength and still retain his speed and athleticism. He's only a sophomore who never spent much time in the weight room in high school

  • BuffTime:

    Hi Kyle,
I've been looking around for info on who plays on special teams for CU (other than the kickers, holders, and return guys). Can you provide a list of special team players? Who blocks for the return guy and who makes up the line for field goals? Is it the same as the starters on the O-line in the case of the field goals for example?

    • Kyle Ringo:

It is not the same. The Longsnapper is Justin Drescher. He only plays special teams. Lots of guys play on assorted units. If you go to CUbuffs.com and go to the football page and click on statistics, there is a section on special teams contributors there.

  • FlatironsBuff:

    Kyle,
What is the status of D-Scott and Ryan Walters? Will they be ready for the small red?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Scott should be ready unless he hurts the ankle again in practice. Walters is still questionable. Same with Dykes.

  • bufffan8:

Where has Sipili been. I assume he is injured. Is that correct?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Sipili was suffering from back spasms earlier in the year and then came back to play some, but he has been out again lately. Could be the same problem. I'll look into it.

  • MDBuff:

What's the difference between a soft commit and a hard commit? Does a soft mean the player has selected a school but still wants to shop around?

    • Kyle Ringo:

that's pretty much exactly what it means.

  • MDBuff:

How do the Buffs prevent long drives from blowing up at the end, which seemed to happen a few times near the OSU end zone?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Guess I don't really understand the exact question. Any number of things can derail a drive, including greats plays by the other team when you do everything right. The best thing any team can do is execute the way they are supposed to and things ought to work out much of the time.

  • MDBuff:

Is Nebraska as good as their record? How do the Buffs stop Ganz?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Yeah, I think they are much better this year and than when they came to Boulder last year. You have to pressure Ganz and force him to make quick decisions and mistakes. He did that in the second half last season.

  • buffalo_flyer:

Whats your best guess for the starting defensive line in 2009?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Depends on who is on the roster. I would say Herrod, Goree and Cunningham all have a good chance to be in the mix from the group already on the roster. Everyone else is sort of questionable at this point. If you're not getting playing time right now, you probably need to take a different approach and work on some things.

  • MDBuff:

Do you think D. Scott will be able to play vs. Nebraska?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Yes, as long as he doesn't hurt his ankle any further in practice.

  • halluxvalgus:

I assume that Hawk isn't in danger (and rightfully so), but what are the chances that he *ahem* reevaluates his support staff? Or does he just point to the Gary Pinkel formula for success?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Hawkins evaluates his coaches every year and this won't be any different. That doesn't mean there won't be a change. It's also possible that assistants get other offers and leave on their own. I think Hawkins does believe in continuity and he's probably right.

  • shoulder2shoulder:

How has Simas looked in practice, he has to be kicking himself for not getting it done in class!

    • Kyle Ringo:

He has always looked really good. He could have really helped this year. Such as shame.

  • shoulder2shoulder:

Have you talked to Kasa lately? Any vibe your getting from him?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I haven't talked to him real recently, but he seems to be really torn between CU and Florida from what I have read.

  • MDBuff:

I'm thinking of subscribing to Rivals or Scout. Would you recommend one over another?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I work for Scout and we're beginning to improve the site significantly. I've got someone working with me now making recruiting calls. I will say that I think the Rivals site also does a very good job covering CU sports.

  • MDBuff:

What does a recruit do at CU for an official visit?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Every visit is different in some ways because they try to tailor them to specific recruits. But some of it is the same. They are hosted by a current player, they see most of the town and the campus, and meet with academic advisers, the Chancellor, athletic director and whoever else they might want to become familiar with. They usually finish the visit Sunday morning with breakfast with coach Hawkins.
