Questions

  • MDBuff:

    Kyle,
Is the glass half full (with a comeback win) or half empty (struggling against a I-AA school)?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Hey a win is a good thing for any team any time. It's half full. I know everyone wants to look down their noses at teams like EWU, but the fact is, the Eagles are talented and well-coached. It's also a fact of life these days that the best dozen or so players on high level Football Championship Subdivision teams are guys who belong at the Division I level and were either overlooked or transferred to the lower tier school.

  • SuperiorBuff6236:

Kyle, what are your thoughts about the game do you think this poor performance will help the team get better or just hurt their confidence and the # of W's they get this season?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think the team will get better. I sort of hate hearing this and hate repeating it, but there is a lot of truth to the fact that this is a young team with a lot to learn, particularly on one key area and that's the offensive line. They can't let one outcome affect the next though. I think these coaches have done a good job in that regard in their time here. They teach guys to move on and focus on the here and now.

  • LJBUFFS:

How are the new RBs handling pass protection? Is there anyway we could go to an I formation?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Who knows what the coaches have up their sleeves, but I'm doubting an I formation is in the works in this offense. I think the guys doing the best job in pass protection are Demetrius Sumler and Maurice Cantrell. I saw Darrell Scott make a pretty nice block in the CSU game against a blitzing linebacker.

  • LJBUFFS:

How is Shaun Moehler doing? With the x-rays negative will he miss anytime? What about Riar Geer, will he miss any additional time due to suspension? The TE could become a whole new weapon the rest of the season.

    • Kyle Ringo:

Coach Hawkins said Sunday night that he expects both Mohler and Geer to be available for the West Virginia game. I think Geer is the most likely of the two to play, but Mohler might surprise me. He was hurting after the EWU game though. Geer will definitely make an impact on the offense. He's very experienced and can do it all, block, catch, run. I think this offense will be much better for it, but I also think Patrick Devenny and Ryan Deehan have proven they can be relied upon. It's a nice problem to have finding time for all three of those guys.

  • MDBuff:

Who's mostly to blame for their struggles on Sat.? Cody? O-line? Coaching?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Well, without being on the headsets and knowing exactly what the plays were and how things were designed, it's tough to say. But I will say any time your line is struggling, your QB and coaches aren't going to look very good. This is a young line other than Sanders. Ryan Miller, who started about half of last year, is the second most experienced guy.

  • MDBuff:

Why did the Buffs continually have problems gaining yardage on first downs?

    • Kyle Ringo:

They might be too predictable and run oriented on first downs. This was a problem at times last year as well. They probably need to get a little more creative with what they do on first downs because they were in a lot of second and third-and-long situations. Those kill drives.

  • MDBuff:

What can the Buffs take from ECU's impressive win over WV? What changes will the Buffs need to make?

    • Kyle Ringo:

They can do their best to emulate the ECU running game. They ran the ball pretty effectively against WVU. They also play tough defense and tackle well. If the Buffs can match ECU in those two areas, they will have a good shot against West Virginia

  • MDBuff:

Who do we have a better chance of beating - WV at home or FSU away?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I always go with the home game in these situations, unless you're talking about going on the road against an obviously inferior opponent.

  • MDBuff:

Will Hawkins move away from this vanilla, predictable offense and allow Scott and Stewart rush more?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think you're going to see the playbook opened a little more now that they're going to be facing some powerhouse teams each week. I think Rodney and Darrell will both be heavily involved from this point forward, but they already have been. I'm not sure you're going to see a lot of 25-carry games for either one of them.

  • MDBuff:

What are the Buffs going to do with an extra few days to prepare for the 'Eers?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Practice and watch film. That's all they need to do. This is a blessing for the offensive line and for guys who have some scrapes and bruises.

  • MDBuff:

What do see predict will happen with Josh Smith? On one hand, he is an electrifying returner, but he has also fumbled twice in the past two games.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think he'll get better at protecting the ball. He knows he made two big mistakes and that one really cost the team. The thing I like about him is he really wants to get better and be the best. When you combine that kind of desire with his kind of ability, it's going to produce some pretty good results. The thing that is sort of scary when you think about Josh is he's having this success despite the fact that he's still not super confident back there. The more touches he gets, the better he will be.
