The Colorado men's golf team started slow but ended hot Monday in Erie as the Buffaloes took the lead after two rounds at their host 7th Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational.

The Buffaloes utilized a 12-under par 276 team score in the second round to vault into a five-stroke lead. Colorado owns a team total of 558 (18-under) with one round left to play. Utah, the first-round leader, is in second place with a 563 total (13-under), with Campbell, Houston Baptist and Wyoming all tied for third at 11-under 565.

The Rocky Mountain state schools owned the leaderboard after the first round with Utah (277, 11-under), Wyoming (280) and Colorado (282) in the top three spots after 18 holes on a day where the weather and conditions couldn't be more perfect.

Colorado got off to a pedestrian start and sat 1-over through 10 holes for those who scored in the morning and with the team in 10th place, but the Buffs caught fire and finished out the day from that point on at 19-under par and in the lead heading into the final 18 holes.

Freshman Morten Toft Hansen, who finished strong with a sixth-place finish on Saturday in New Mexico's Tucker Invitational, picked up right where he left off. He opened with a 1-under 71 and then went out and fired a 7-under 65 in the afternoon on the 7,745-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club course layout. His 8-under 136 total has him in the individual lead, one stroke up on Air Force's Sunwoo Choi and Houston Baptist's Val Almendarez.

Hansen tied CU's freshman record for low 18-hole score with the 65, joining the two teammates who set the mark during the 2013-14 season.

Junior Yannik Paul, CU's stroke average leader (71.4), is tied for 23rd. He opened with a 74 but rallied with a 68 in the afternoon to close 36 holes with a 2-under 142. He had seven birdies and 24 pars countered by just five bogeys.

Junior Spencer Painton rounded out CU's first-team contingent with a 73-74 — 147 score, with four birdies, 25 pars and seven bogeys as he is tied for 60th.

The final round is slated for an 8:15 a.m. staggered shotgun start today, with the exception of the top four teams that will all tee off between 7:55 and 8:35 on No. 1.
