The Colorado men's golf team battled the elements Friday in Albuquerque, N.M., and was in the middle of the pack through two rounds of the 63rd Annual New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational.

San Diego State owns the team lead with a team score of 3-under par 576, the only one of 15 teams competing that is under par through 36 holes. Colorado State is in second, eight strokes back at 581, with host New Mexico (583), Brigham Young (584) and Texas-El Paso (586) rounding out the top five. The Buffaloes are in ninth place with a 593 total.

Colorado was in seventh after the morning round, with a respectable 3-over 291 on the long, 7,555-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course layout. Conditions worsened throughout the day with high winds wreaking havoc for about 90 minutes in the afternoon, inflating the average score in the 92-man field from 74.8 for the first round to 76.2 for the second.

The Buffs were paced by true freshman Morton Toft Hansen, who fired a pair of 73s for a 2 over-146. He is tied for 14th place. He reached 73 in the same fashion for both 18s, scoring three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys in each round.

Junior Spencer Painton is tied for 20th after posting a 71-76 —147 scorecard. He was the only CU player to record a subpar round on the day. He was fairly consistent throughout the day, with four birdies, 26 pars, five bogeys and a double; the latter came during the wind explosion, but otherwise he scored pars on every other hole until things died down.
