Colorado defensive end Chris Mulumba went through his first spring at the Division I level and came away feeling good about his performance.

A native of Finland and a transfer from Diablo Valley (Calif.) College, Mulumba arrived at CU in January looking to compete for a starting job at end.

The 6-foot-4, 280-pound Mulumba, who is 24 years old, said the transition "wasn't too bad," and felt he improved quite a bit during CU's 15 spring practices.

"Oh yeah, absolutely, the spring helped me a lot," he said. "Just understanding the game, technique-wise, what the coaching staff wants me to do and the scheme."

Mulumba said CU's tempo was a bit of a surprise at first, but he felt by the end he had caught up.

While several players are in competition for starting roles at defensive end, Mulumba is very much in the mix.

"Chris Mulumba has a lot of ability," defensive coordinator DJ Eliot said. "He was a good get for us in the offseason."
