Idiot of the year
Posted May 6, 2008
Work in the business of sports writing long enough, and there's not much that will shock you any more.
For instance: on Tuesday alone, stories from the world of "sports" included a former college player convicted of murder (of a suspected drug dealer, no less); the usual assortment of positive drug tests (including horses); a Georgia Tech football administrator arrested for drunk driving, drugs and hit-and-run; and the ongoing saga of pro soccer player Ronaldo and the cross-dressing prostitutes.
But we have our nominee for the biggest dummy of the year.
Meet former Vikings defensive end Darrion Scott, who was charged with assault -- on his 2-year-old son.
Seems Scott, whose time as a lineman obviously eliminated what slight lick of common sense he once had, decided it would be fun to put a plastic bag over his son's head.
Yep, a plastic dry cleaning bag.
According to the police complaint, the boy's mother went to pick up her son when she heard the boy crying. She investigated, and there was daddy, holding the bag over his son's head. Scott allegedly told his wife he was "playing" with the child and just wanted to see if the boy could get the bag off his head by himself.
There have been other incidents. The boy's mother has documented what one doctor said were either burn marks or impact injuries, likely intentionally inflicted, on her son after a visit with dad. And, dad has already admitted to doing a "victory dance" with the boy to celebrate successful potty-training, an act that involved throwing the boy in the air. The boy fell -- of course -- and suffered three lumps on his forehead.
Scott's agent said his client is really "just a teddy-bear," and said the entire misunderstanding would get cleared up.
That's not a misunderstanding. That's an idiot begging to be put somewhere where he won't be near society for quite a while.
