Big 12 Championships

Posted May 4, 2008

Even the most casual of track and field fans should take advantage of the opportunity to catch the Big 12 Track and Field Championships when they come to Boulder May 16-18.

Some of the best track and field athletes in the nation will be at Potts Field for the meet. A quick glance through the best times, distances and heights this year in NCAA Division I will show Big 12 athletes in the top 10 a majority of the events.

That includes Texas's Leonel Manzano, who owns the fastest 1,500 in the nation this year (3:38.7), Texas A&M's 4x100 meter relay team (38.83, second-fastest in the nation this year) and CU's Bill Nelson, whose 8:41.99 steeplechase is second-best in the nation this year.

The list of women in among the nation's best is equally impressive.

Track and field has never been a huge spectator sport in the U.S. But a meet with great athletes is well worth watching.

Consider it a warmup for the Olympics.
