Kreis out at UCLA

Posted January 15, 2008

A couple of noteworthy items from the college football world over the last few days.

First, the Los Angeles Daily News reported last week that new UCLA football coach Rick Neuheisel fired strength and conditioning coordinator Doc Kreis. Interesting because Kreis was the strength coach at Colorado when Neuheisel took over for Bill McCartney, and Kreis stayed at CU through the Neuheisel era.

Kreis finally left Colorado late in Gary Barnett’s tenure when he and Barnett didn’t see eye-to-eye, and he went to UCLA to work with Karl Dorrell. Now he’s on the job market again ...

And, some interesting happenings out of the Big Ten, where Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald has hired former CU assistant Mike Hankwitz as his defensive coordinator. Hankwitz was fired by Wisconsin’s Bret Bielema in a move that surprised Badger followers. Wisconsin had one of the nation’s best defenses in 2006, but slipped last year — apparently enough for Bielema to decide to go in a different direction.

at least one of UCLA's DE recruits is considering Colorado. I would love to be a fly on the wall when Ricky is badmouthing Colorado for him.

I live in SoCal and I have been following Neuheisel closely. Very closely. So far Ricky has taken the high road. Instead of talking down WU, CU or any PAC10 schools including USC, he has been complimenting them for what they are, and then spends all of his time talking about UCLA's past (tradition and his Rose Bowl exp.) and the future of the program.

It has looks like he has learned from his past ways... but, only time will tell.

I hope he has actually cleaned up his act.

I hope Tricky Rick has changed too. I'm a CU fan to the core, but I've always liked UCLA as well. I also like UW a lot too. I don't want to see him bring down another problem. Let's hope he's a new man and not a slick lawyer type anymore!
