Nepotism charge makes no sense

Posted August 21, 2007

I’m always amazed when common sense and logic take a flyer in discussions concerning something as relatively simple as college football.

There are actually people out there who believe CU coach Dan Hawkins would start his son Cody at quarterback even if he weren’t the best possible choice.

Think about it. This is a college football head coach whose career hinges upon his win-loss record. We’re not talking a high school coach who has virtually nothing to lose, or a pee-wee coach who is trying to resurrect his past through his son. We’re talking a Division I head coach whose future depends upon him putting the best possible players on the field — no matter what their last names might be.

If you really think Hawkins is going to jeopardize everything he’s worked for up to this point just to get his son some playing time, reality escaped you long, long ago.

You can even take it a step farther. Figure this: the future of Hawkins’ family also depends on such decisions. Guaranteed, there’s no father worth his salt out there who would jeopardize the future of his career AND his family in order to have his son play.

Just not going to happen.

Of course, there are plenty of conspiracy theorists out there who will continue to insist otherwise. These are the same people who believe man never walked on the moon, who insist that there were several gunmen on the grassy knoll, and who believed that Mike Vick was innocent.

To those folks, common sense is a concept that cannot be grasped.
