Not fun

Posted March 3, 2008

My guess is that the last team Colorado wants to face in the Big 12 tournament is Iowa State.

But it looks as if the Buffs will meet the Cyclones for the third time this year when the Big 12 tournament starts on March 11 in Kansas City.

Iowa State was the team that ruined Colorado’s season back on Jan. 13 when the Buffs gave up a 12-point lead with 12 minutes left in the game and lost in double overtime 84-77 in the Coors Events Center.

The loss snapped an 11-game losing streak and it sent CU spiraling as the Buffs would go on to lose nine of their next 10 to dash their hopes of making the NCAA tournament.

The Buffs fared much worse in Ames when they lost 65-45 on Jan. 30.

Don’t forget the 2005 Big 12 tournament.

In the opening round of the 2005 Big 12 tournament, in former coach Ceal Barry’s last game, the Buffs had the game won but Anna Nedovic missed a wide open layup that would have secured the victory. Instead, she missed and Iowa State’s Lyndsey Medders made a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left to win 64-62.

Would the Buffs like a shot at redemption? Sure.

But they just don’t matchup well with Iowa State.

For awhile it looked like CU was going to play Texas in the Big 12 tournament and the Buffs handily beat the Longhorns 67-52 this year. Another possibility was to have CU play Texas Tech, and the Buffs surely wanted another crack at the Lady Raiders given how they just did not show up against Tech in Lubbock earlier this year and lost 62-44.

Texas’ 65-50 win over Oklahoma on Sunday changed the Big 12 landscape and bumped the Buffs down to ninth, where they are tied with Texas Tech and Kansas.

But if all the favored teams win this week, CU will finish ninth, with Texas Tech and Kansas tied for 10th.

Here are the standings and the final games:

Baylor 12-3 24-4

Kansas State 12-3 20-8

Oklahoma 11-4 21-6

Oklahoma State 10-5 22-6

Texas A&M 10-5 22-7

Nebraska 8-7 19-10

Iowa State 7-8 18-10

Texas 6-9 18-11
