Recruit aims high
Posted December 3, 2006
Krysten Boogard, the player the CU women's basketball team hopes will fill its 2007 recruiting class, attended Saturday's game against USC on her official visit.
The 6-foot-4 forward hails from Regina, Saskatchewan, and has known CU men's basketball freshman Marc Van Burck, also from Saskatchewan, for about 10 years.
Boogard played this summer for the Canada Women's U-20 national team in the FIBA Americas Championship. In five games, she averaged 14.8 minutes, 9.4 points and 4 rebounds as Canada took the bronze medal. Canada will play for the World championship next year.
Currently, she's playing against all-star type teams, including a boys team recently, in Canada for her national team program.
"I want to play in the WNBA or in Europe," Boogard said. "And I want to play in the Olympics for Canada. I hope any school I choose will support me and help me get there."
Boogard took a visit to Kansas in mid-October and has visited Gonzaga. She said she's not leaning toward either Kansas, Gonzaga or Colorado at this point, but plans to decide before Christmas.
"It's a tough decision," Boogard said. "I can see where CU needs me. But it's hard to see where I'd like to be for the next four or five years."
As an aside, Boogard's brother, Derek, is a second-year pro for the Minnesota Wild. On Minnesota's website, Derek says Denver is one of his favorite cities to visit when on the road. Derek was selected in the seventh round, 202nd overall, in the 2001 NHL entry draft.
Boogard would fill CU's last spot for the '07 class, which includes signed guards Britney Blythe, Chelsea Dale and Brittany Spears.
