Wheatley asks to play offense
Posted September 4, 2007
Colorado cornerback Terrence Wheatley wants so badly to beat Arizona State and former CU secondary coach Craig Bray this week, the speedster has asked to play offense.
Wheatley said he spent part of training camp working at wide receiver and coaches have toyed with the idea of using him on the offensive side of the ball this season. He is the team's fastest player.
Wheatley said there is no time like the present with the Buffs traveling to play the Sun Devils this week. Bray is the Sun Devils first-year defensive coordinator after spending the 2004 and 2005 seasons in Boulder and 2006 at Minnesota.
During his days with the Buffs, Bray clashed with some of his players. Wheatley has been relucatant to say exactly what the problems were then. Safety Ryan Walters also has said he will play with a chip on his shoulder this week, knowing Bray is on the other side of the field.
Wheatley was effective returning kicks in the season opener and wants to have the ball in his hands more often. Coach Dan Hawkins said he plans to keep Wheatley in the kick-return role regardless of whether Hugh Charles returns to health soon. He has a strained hamstring.
CU coaches should use Keyshawn Johnson logic with Wheatley. Give him the damn ball.

Hrmm. I like this concept. He got UP there to get the ball from CSU in OT. I want to see him stretch out ASU's secondary and burn some turf on the way to the end zone.
That being said, could he please still play D? Because, ummm, from what I saw, we need all the help in the backfield that we can get. Either way, T-Wheat is a play maker. Excellent oskie, nice returns, etc. Get some Buffs.

I want to know more about the situation w/ this Bray guy. Let's stop beating around the bush. Find the person to ask the right questions to and find out what the deal was/is. I can't imagine Hawkins is okay with his players outwardly talking about having a "chip on their shoulders" regarding an opponent. There's got to be more to this.

The players thought he was too critical of them to the media. This hurts the way they are perceived and eventually their draft stock.
