To be or not to be a Buff?
Posted November 17, 2007
I've been told by a very reliable source close to the CU football program that Darrell Scott, the nation's No. 1 running back recruit, has given coach Dan Hawkins an oral commitment to play in Boulder.
The trouble with that is, Scott told me it's not true Saturday night.
So what gives?
I think there is a little bit of truth here on both sides. I'm guessing Scott has told CU coaches and players he plans to come to Boulder and play with his uncle, true freshman wide receiver Josh Smith.
But I also think he probably wants to make the most of his recruiting experience. I mean, you only get to be the No. 1 running back recruit in the nation once. Why not make sure to take all five of your official visits and let everyone show you the best time they have to offer?
Plus, you get to see some different parts of the country, different campuses and meet new people.
I caught Scott outside the Buffs' locker room following the 55-10 loss to Missouri a couple weeks ago and he told me he is very interested in CU, mostly because Smith plays here, but also because he likes the coaching staff and the fact that he should be able to play right away.
Scott and Smith are like brothers and family means a lot to both young men.
Scott took an official visit to Texas last week and apparently enjoyed his time in Austin, according to comments from one of his high school coaches who accompanied him.
Scott will visit Florida this week and told me he wants to get to LSU at some point as well. When I talked to him at the CU-Missouri game, he said he might wait all the way to signing day to announce his decision.
The source I referred to earlier is someone who has given me credible information in the past and is someone in a position to know. This person seemed very confident in telling me Scott is a CU commit. So take that for what it's worth.
I generally subscribe to the theory that nothing is a done deal or a sure thing in recruiting until the signed national letter of intent is spit out of the fax machine.
Scott is focused on trying to win the state championship in California right now. His St. Bonaventure High School team won its first-round game in the playoffs Friday night. He scored two touchdowns and ran for 137 yards.

I'm going to do another mailbag for Thankgiving morning. So send me your questions to ringok@dailycamera.com.

Kyle - I would think that Hawk would get a huge benefit if Scott would announce now. Perhaps that would help Katoa and others make their decisions to go with the Buffs. Or, perhaps Hawk is telling other potential commits that Gates is on board, and it does not make a difference if Gates goes public with his CU decision. What do you think?

Wow, some pretty crazy stuff in there. Any word on Katoa?

Scott and St. Bonaventure play Westlake in round 2 of the playoffs this Friday. Don't believe he will be in Florida this weekend.
Curious, you spoke to him last night and he told you he would be in Florida? Or are you going off old information.

Well, if it holds true and Scott does come here, I'm curious if CU would make history for the first father-son and uncle-nephew combinations in college sports history. Smith and Scott would have to take turns scoring. Those two would be major playmakers. Throw Gates, Simas, Celestine and Polk into the mix and the Buffs have explosiveness at last!
