Another Hawkins could join Buffs

Posted November 16, 2007

KYLE RINGO373[1]

CU coach Dan Hawkins says his youngest son, Drew, could join the Buffs as a walk-on in 2008.

It's far from a done deal because Hawkins doesn't even know if Drew wants to play college football. Drew Hawkins is a pretty talented young man with varied interests. His father believes he could easily choose to pursue a career in music or develop his talents as an artist.

"I would let him if he wanted to," Hawkins said of Drew possibly walking-on. "But I'm not sure that's what he wants to do."

Obviously Dan Hawkins is not allowed to comment on specific recruits other than to acknowledge if he is recruiting someone. But he can talk all he wants about his son. The big, bad NCAA actually allows you to be a parent before your duties as a coach.

Drew Hawkins is the quarterback at Holy Family High School and he is considered one of the best players in Class 2A. If he does play at the college level, Dan Hawkins isn't so sure Drew will be a quarterback.

Drew was a wide receiver at some point either earlier in high school in Boise, Idaho, or at the Pop Warner level. Dan Hawkins said Drew could play wide receiver in college and he could be a safety if he adds some strength and weight.

""He's sort of an interesting kid," Hawkins said. "I think potentially he could be a pretty good player, but he's just doggone skinny right now."

Drew Hawkins is 6-foot-21/2 and 175 pounds right now.He towers over his older brother, Cody, the Buffs' current starting quarterback, who swears he is 5-11. Drew is being recruited by Wyoming and Valdosta State in Georgia. He also has some interest in Boise State. I wasn't exactly clear whether the interest is mutual.

"I think he's totally open to doing whatever," Dan Hawkins said. "When he gets out in the open, he can go. I'm not saying he's a burner, but he's faster than you think."

I've seen Drew Hawkins at CU practices in the past messing around on the sidelines and playing catch with different people. The guy definitely has an arm. It will be interesting to see if he chooses to stick with football. I'm betting he does. It's in is blood.

You might have seen a story I did late in training camp in which I talked to Dan and Cody Hawkins about the Hawkins boys' desire to start a band together. They both play guitar and drums and Cody enjoys singing a little bit. They have transformed their parent's garage into a makeshift practice space apparently.

I should note that I asked coach Hawkins about this whole topic after Thursday's practice. It wasn't something he brought up on his own. I just like to make that clear for all the kooky conspiracy theorists I get e-mail from every day.

Speaking of e-mail. Send me some questions for the mailbag. I'll have it up Saturday morning. You can read before you head to campus to check out the new practice bubble and the introduction of Ralphie V.

we want to know more about the financial situation of the department. You had written about this topic regularly in the past but it seems you are no longer doing so. What gives?
