Tigers angered by BuffVision
Posted November 13, 2007
When I returned to the press box in Folsom Field a couple weeks ago after doing postgame interviews following the Missouri game, one of my friends in the media who covers the Tigers told me Missouri players and coaches were fired up about a feature they saw during a timeout on the Folsom Field video boards.
CU does a flashback segment every week during home games showing significant highlights of prior Buff wins over that week's opponent. During the Missouri game, BuffVision showed highlights of the CU win in the series in 2005. The clip also boasted about the Buffs shutting down former Missouri QB Brad Smith.
It probably wasn't the wisest decision to use such a recent game. I mean, there are still plenty of Tigers on this year's team that played in that game. Anyway, they didn't appreciate it much.
I bring all of this up now because the topic came up again this week at Missouri's media day. A few coaches and players admitted that Missouri starters stayed in the game a little longer than normal that day because of the video they saw. Basically, it inspired them to want to run up the score a little bit. The final score was Missouri 55, CU 10.
"I didn't think that was the right thing to do, to put something up like that, especially when you're getting it handed to you a little bit," MU offensive coordinator Dave Christensen told Missouri media members this week. "It upset the players, it upset me after the fact and I had heard it. I call the plays, Gary (Pinkel) decides when to back off. Until he tells me to back off, I'm trying to score on every play."
Here is what CU sports information director Dave Plati had to say about the whole deal. Needless to say, it probably will be remembered down the line on both sidelines in future seasons.
"BuffVision handles the feature flashbacks from previous games in the series, and has been using some highlights usually from our last win over a school, but the Missouri one also highlighted how the defense shut them down, particularly Brad Smith," Plati said. "I assume that’s where some of their players had a problem with it, because the other part of it was showcasing Lawrence Vickers’ four touchdowns that game.
"It has never been our intention to show up a school, and wasn’t this time, and it’s never been a problem with any other team. Now I don’t recall us being upset when I am certain they did some fifth-down stuff late last decade on their board, but that’s probably because we won. Regardless, we’ve already decided to change things up a little bit as we wouldn’t like to see that done to us. We’ll go with a memorable moment from longer ago in a series or something from that particular day in our history."
Anyway, it's just an interesting note you might be interesting in and might not have heard about otherwise.

Hrmmm... are we to believe that Mizzou would have gone easy on CU if we hadn't shown that Flashback? Not so sure on that one... I mean, okay, it angered them. Call the Waahmbulance. Isn't that part of the benefit of getting to play on your home turf? Doesn't the home team's fans shouting obscenities and "Yo Momma" one liners at the visiting team anger them as well?
That being said... it probably wasn't in good form to play that while we were getting "taken to the woodshed." I mean, what better way to glaringly point out the one sided score on the field than to pull up a past, successful outing, by the Buffs. Not a great choice but should it have really angered them? I could see them smirking maybe... the joke was on us if you ask me! The Mizzou offensive coordinator said: "...it upset me after the fact..." Seems that after a successful 55-10 rout of CU, Mr. Christensen would've been a bit more lighthearted about the situation instead of getting upset. Maybe laughing about the obvious irony of the situation? What a lamer.
Interesting report though Kyle. Keep the content coming!!

Just makes me despise Mizzou even more. The only time I will root for them is when they are playing nebraska. They played a dirty game, and as far as I am concerned they can take their attitude and stick it where the sun don't shine.

i'll offer a different view, still as a buff fan. i attended the game. when that material came on the screen, i thought it was in poor taste, for several reasons. one, that is no way to treat a guest, especially one in-conference. two, gloating about a past win over the current opponent is not only bad taste but bad tactics - why give an opponent extra motivation - as it apparently did. everyone on this board would have had the same reaction had the situation been reversed. three, it is simply bush league and just poor sportsmanship. four, folsom's reputation around the conference is that of a pit with classless fans, now the ath dept adds to that problem. five, it will add unnecessary strain between the schools - remember the 5th down? six, plati's explanation doesn't cut it - it ultimately comes back to bohn who needs to take 'better care' of the buff vision staff. i think bohn is doing great, but he missed one here.

disagree totally, its our home field and if the visiting team doesn't like whats being shown, then it sounds like we got it exactly right
and who thinks folsom is a pit, the huskers fans that abandoned their team after a blowout loss? the missouri fans that are still upset about 5 downs?

dear flyer:
about the pit: i hear it from visiting fans over the past few years, fans from every other team in the big 12. some of that is expected but each SINGLED OUT FOLSOM as an unpleasant experience over and above their experience in other big 12 venues.
and, its is home field so we can show anything we want? show some class, exhibit some sportsmanship - something wrong with that? also, such demonstrations reek of desperation and trying to represent ourselves as being more than we are. the truly competent don't have to toot their own horn - their place on the pecking order is already clear. its a losers' mentality - be better than that if you want to better than you current status.
