Quotes of note

Posted August 19, 2007

Offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich on how quarterback Nick Nelson took the news that he won't be the starter:

“Nick’s a great kid. I love Nick, and he took it probably exactly how a competitive guy, who is still going to compete, would. He was obviously disappointed. But we’re going to need that guy.”

Coach Dan Hawkins on how special it is to be able to coach his son:

“I mean it and I’ll take it to my grave. He’s a good kid and a good player, and I like all that stuff about him, but it’s not ...I’m not out here going, ‘Hey, there’s my boy. Hey, look at my boy make plays.’ I mean I was jacked up when Nick made plays. I want to score some points and win some games, and I don’t care what his last name is.”

Wide receiver Dusty Sprague on losing fellow wide receiver Josh Smith to a bruised kidney:

“It’s a big loss. I feel really bad for him. He was playing really well and he was a really excited young guy to get in here and help out the team. I’m just impressed with how he popped up after that.”

Dan Hawkins on whether Marcus Burton is the only player who will be academically ineligible:

“There are still grades rolling in and papers being written and guys taking independent study courses. So it’s kind of a race to the finish line.”

Cody Hawkins on how having the decision about the starting quarterback out of the way helps him:

"I think it helps the team feel a lot more comfortable, but as far as me, I think I've always prepared like I was the starterand felt like I was the starter. It's just kind of nice that now I get to move forward and you get a little more reps, but the way our team is, we're very even. I mean, it's 60-40 between the ones and the twos. The way I've been preparing and the way I've been thinking, it's not going to be a big change for me."
