Hawkins: Recruits are ripe

Posted August 17, 2007

Dan Hawkins has received six oral commitments for the 2008 recruiting class while some of his competitors in the Big 12 have nearly filled their classes. Hawkins didn't sound worried about recruiting when I asked him about it today.

Hawkins said he is expecting two large groups of recruits for the first two home games of the season -- in Denver at Invesco Field against CSU and at Folsom Field against Florida State.

Hawkins acknowledged there are probably some recruits who are taking a wait-and-see approach with CU, which is coming off a 2-10 season.

"I think that's part of it," Hawkins said. "I think there is a lot of guys who are very, very ripe. They just want to get here and see the place. So those first couple games, we're going to have a lot of people here."

Hawkins said it has been difficult for him and his staff adjusting to the ban on text messaging, which went into effect this month. He said the CU staff meets several times a week, even during training camp, to discuss recruiting and formulate plans of attack.

"It's never off my radar," Hawkins said.

Hawkins is now e-mailing recruits and their coaches more than ever before because of the ban on texting. But e-mail is much less reliable.

...Transfer place-kicker Aric Goodman, from Cherry Creek High School and the University of Wyoming, has joined the team early. Goodman was able to begin practicing when former walk-on Jim Parra quit the team.

Kyle - when you say 6 commitments, who are you referring to? Chance Blackmon and Corey Surrency cannot be considered true verbals right now, particularly Blackmon. Are there others that I don't know of, because I count 4 verbals.

never mind - you're counting Surrency and I forgot about Berard.

IS there any ban on instant messaging recruits? Seems that would be a reasonable way to chat with recruits... and not cost them money like texting supposedly does. And how does voice chatting like on skype count as far as the NCAA is concerned?
