It's Cody's job to lose

Posted August 15, 2007

Coaches plan to name a starting quarterback after Saturday's scrimmage on Fan Appreciation day, and I'd be shocked if it's not Cody Hawkins.

The good news for Buffs fans is that the team will begin the season with two solid quarterbacks ready to play each week. That's a much better position to be in than the program was last year.

Here is why I think Cody has won the job over Nick Nelson.

It's really simple. Their physical skills are about equal. It isn't like one has a noticeably stronger arm than the other. So what it comes down to is mastery of the offense and the intangible factors such as leadership and respect from teammates.

Cody wins those two categories. His teammates have said that his knowledge of the offense is like having a coach on the field. Many of the Buffs also have said they have never seen or met a more natural leader.

...Bernard Jackson was back on the field today in full pads and he looked pretty good in his roles as a running back and wide receiver. Jackson looks like he is having fun finally. He had missed most of the first week of practice because of several class conflicts. He said he will be academically eligible for the fall.

...Linebacker Marcus Burton still hadn't heard about his grades from summer classes, but he might know if he is eligible as early as Thursday. I'm not so sure Burton would be a candidate to fill in for suspended linebacker Michael Sipili. I think that is going to come down to R.J. Brown and Jeff Smart. It's also important to keep in mind that this staff likes to play plenty of nickel defense, when Sipili comes off the field anyway.

...Walk-on place-kicker Jim Parra and walk-on offensive lineman Travis Duffy decided to quit the team

...The Buffs practice again tonight at 8 p.m.

And if their physical skills are about equal and It isn't like one has a noticeably stronger arm than the other, then, why a freshman vs. a juco, with two years more experience?
It only comes down to one issue, the fact that one is Dan Hawkins son and the other is just another QB waiting for his big chance as a backup, just in case "lil Cody" makes that decision.
Speaking of leadership and respect from teammates, it appears that Nelson is equal in that respect, as well. After reading his past history in the Denver Post and Boulder news, when the juco first came aboard last January, he has a history of being a great leader and the respect from his teammates.
There never really was a race between the two Q.B.
That was all a bunch of
propaganda for the public
and the media.
It all boils down to the fact that it's all about Cody, the coach's 5'11" son, isn't it?
Nepotism?
Maybe.
