Buffs produce 609 yards of offense; Nelson hurt
Posted August 12, 2007
The Colorado offense looked much better in the first scrimmage of fall camp this morning, but junior quarterback Nick Nelson walked off the field with his throwing hand wrapped in a bag of ice.
Nelson was scheduled for X-rays this afternoon after hitting his hand on a defender's helmet. He continued to play after being hurt and said he doesn't anticipate any bad news from doctors.
Nelson and fellow quarterbacks Cody Hawkins and Matt Ballenger led the Buffs to 609 total yards in 103 plays from scrimmage. The running game and wide receiver Josh Smith were particularly impressive.
CU racked up 332 yards rushing on 60 attempts. Smith, a true freshman from California, scored on two passing plays and should have had a touchdown on a third pass, one his two scores was called back because of a penalty. He was chewed out by head coach Dan Hawkins after his first score after being flagged for diving into the end zone.
We'll have a lot more on the scrimmage Monday on Buffzone and a few more tidbits later today back here on the blog.
