Byron Ellis earns a gold star
Posted August 12, 2007
There were times during today's scrimmage when senior tailback Byron Ellis reminded me of Bobby Purify.
Running backs coach Darian Hagan has been grinding on all his guys to run with more toughness and Ellis seems to have gotten the message. Ellis hit holes hard today and managed to break some tackles, which is something he hasn't really been known for in the past.
Purify was known for his toughness, particularly during his senior season three years ago when he played most of the year with two separated shoulders. This is the type of passion Buffs fans have been hoping to see from Ellis.
He wasn't the only impressive running back today, but he stands out in my mind because he doesn't always seem to run with the same aggression. If he can keep this going, CU should have a nice ground game this season with Ellis, Hugh Charles, Demetrius Sumler and a dose here and there of Benrad Jackson.
I also liked watching true freshman running back Brian Lockridge. He has some speed and toughness as well as an ability to make people miss. He might be a year away from really competing for playing time though.
...
Just got the word from the CU sports information department that X-rays on quarterback Nick Nelson's throwing hand were negative. Nelson hit his hand on a teammates helmet during the scrimmage and walked off the field with it wrapped in a bag of ice. He is day-to-day (just like the rest of us).
Tight end Riar Geer also suffered a sprained ankle and is day-to-day. Something was clearly bothering safety D.J. Dykes as well, but CU did not list him on its injury report.
Defensive tackle Brandon Nicolas and tight end Tyson Devree did not participate because of bumps and bruises, but both are expected back this week.

Which QB looked the best today?

I was down there. I think it was close but I like Cody Hawkins better. He scored on every drive I saw him do. He had a bomb touchdown that was called back for illegal formation. He looked really good IMO

I'd say Cody looks just a little bit better to me. I think he's just more comfortable with everything. I do think the Buffs are going to go into the season with two capable quarterbacks.
